SEVEN AM START!! D: I AM SOOOOO FREAKIN TIRED!!!
i had to wake up at 5 (but got out of bed at 5:30), leave the house by 6 so that i could get there 10 to 7...the traffic was terrible on the freeway and i made it just in time and i almost got lost on my way to the ward cos i'm on the very top level and the hospital is like a maze...
But it was such a fun/scary day.
Scary:
I got left with an elderly, overweight man who couldn't walk, and he needed assistance with showering so there i was on my first day, half his height (and weight), never showered a person in my entire life (except babies)...and i had to wash this man and help him take his boxers off while his wife waited outside :\ but the key is to not be awkward, and act as though i've done and seen this a million times!
I received a thousand thankyous from his wife however, and she goes to me "you poor thing...you have probably been put off men for awhile now!"
But they were both lovely and in the end it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be :)
Fun:
Giving out meds and meeting and interacting with patients and doing blood sugar levels :)
The only thing was that the nurse on my ward who was supposed to be taking care of me & supervising me was not friendly and she was young and kinda put me onto another nurse (who was this super super super friendly lady from Zimbabwe who was really knowledgeable and extremely encouraging...so i didn't really mind)
Nursing is a very rewarding job and even though i've been told this by a lot of people, i never really realised it till today. The patients are always extremely thankful and encouraging, and from emptying catheters, wiping bums, remaking soiled beds, to feeding patients and talking with them, I felt grateful that I chose to do this course!
